How Screenwriters For Hire Work
Are you an independent film producer that needs to hire a professional screenwriter? Do you currently own the rights to a successful novel that would make a great screenplay or television series? Who Are You?
My name is Erick Mertz and I’m a professional screenwriter for hire. I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon where I have lived my entire life. Throughout my career as a screenwriter I have written dozens of feature length screenplays. Many of those scripts have gone on to win major awards, been optioned by producers, and went into production.
My debut feature length screenplay, “The Fawn”, was a finalist for the Academy of Film Science’s Nicholl Fellowship in 2004. That rural crime script was also recognized by the Austin Film Festival, The Story Pros, and the Oregon Screenwriting awards. Since writing “The Fawn” I have gone on to write several other feature length screenplays. I have written original works in a wide range of genres, covering everything from psychological thriller and mystery to low budget horror and biopic.
After many years in the business, my screenwriting skills are sharp and diverse, and I look forward to opportunities to work with exciting clients.
As a screenwriter for hire, I work with producers to develop exciting original works. My main focus is on writing screenplays that sell. That means properly formatted scripts, structured to please a producer.
Often I am hired to adapt existing novels, non-fiction articles and books, or short stories for cinematic development. I have created feature length and television scripts for independent producers working for Netflix, releasing on YouTube, and other markets across the world.
My writing journey began in college at the University of Oregon where I received degrees in English and communications. After taking years to carefully hone my craft, I decided to evolve that expertise. In 2005, I created this company, Erick Mertz Writing, as a way of bringing those story telling gifts to my clients.
I work with a professional team of top notch screenwriters, editors and story coaches. Everyone that is a part of my team is a writer that I would trust to write my story.
What is my company goal? It’s pretty simple, actually. I seek to bring high quality writing solutions to you at an affordable rate.

The Art Of Screenwriting And You
For as long as there have been movies, screenwriters have been crafting those stories we fall in love with. As the big movie screen evolved into television, and eventually streaming, screenplays have remained largely the same.
This means that a screenplay from yesteryear will look almost exactly like those of today.
Breaking into movies doesn’t require a writer to move to Los Angeles anymore. With the internet practically ubiquitous, movie making opportunities are cropping up all over the world.
What is required for someone to break in?
A lot of patience. Good story ideas. A killer screenplay.
In my career, I have seen a lot of screenplays come across my desk. Some of those scripts are really good. There are a few that I don’t mind saying, make me envious.
A vast majority, however, need a professional touch before they’re ready to sell. Whether it’s rewriting a first draft, incorporating coverage notes, or developing an idea to its utmost potential, a professional screenwriter often represents the right path to success.
Screenwriter For Hire: Who Uses Them?
When I started my career as a professional screenwriter for hire, before the streaming boom, the market for selling a script was rather limited. There were a few producers making movies in Hollywood and a few smaller filmmakers outside of it, but otherwise, it was a fairly closed system.
That simply isn’t the way things work anymore.
There are two significant factors that have fueled a current boom in screenwriting.
The first factor, alluded to above, is the massive proliferation in on-line streaming services. Shaking free from the shackles of established network/cable television markets and theatrical release, there is quite simply more high quality content around. Between the increase in platforms to sell high-quality content, like Netflix and Hulu, and the ease of self-releasing a film via YouTube, there are no longer any excuses not to seek out your audience.
The other factor in the screenwriting boom is the meteoric rise of self-published authors. A decade ago, the idea of a fiction author making six figures on a self-published book seemed outlandish. Wait. It was completely unheard of. Now, the number of best-selling authors who are self-publishing their work is absolutely staggering.
Screenplay adaptation is huge. Not just for the chosen few books released by the elite, big New York publishers. Those successful self-publishing authors are making their way onto the market and finding success.
If you’re sitting on intellectual property (known to many throughout the business as IP) it’s time to consider developing it. To properly develop a book to film, giving yourself the best chance of reaching that audience, you need a professionally written script. A screenwriter for hire is a great option to get you there.

For some, reaching out for help can be difficult. To those people, I usually try and remind them of how difficult writing a screenplay is. It’s really difficult, take it from a professional.

Make the decision today to take the first step toward meeting your audience. They are out there right now, flipping through the channels, waiting for your story to hit the market.
It’s up to you whether you’re ready to deliver.
